Five Important Steps to Take After Storm Damage

1. Take Safety Precautions

Heavy winds can create physical hazards such as collapsed roofing, window damage, loose branches on trees or standing water in the home or basement. Moisture from water damage can soak into furniture and building material making the perfect environment for mold growth as well, which can cause health issues.  Make sure to shut off the main gas line if you smell gas and beware of exposed nails, broken glass and sharp objects around the property. Make sure to contact a reputable property restoration company to do cleanup and secure your property to make it safe to use.

2. Photograph the Damage

If it is safe to do so, use your phone or camera to photograph the damage so you will have a record of the damage for your insurance company.  This will ensure that you have documented the damage and will ensure you are fully compensated for the damage.

3. Contact Your Insurance Company

Have your property restoration company or directly contact your insurance agent immediately to notify them about the damage to your home. The company will send out an adjuster to determine the extent of the damage so that payment for repairs can be made.

4. Look Into Federal Disaster Assistance

In some instances, the federal government declares areas affected by the storms as a disaster area that is eligible for loans to help restore property back to normal. Look into this to see if you qualify for any of these loans.
